HANOVER TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Several departments responded to a massive 3-alarm fire in Hanover Township on Sunday night.
Fire crews were called to 400 block of Sugar Maple Court, according to Northampton County dispatchers.
Flames and heavy smoke could be seen billowing out of the roof of the residence.
Emergency dispatchers say two residents and one firefighter were taken to the hospital and are expected to be released.
Fire Chief Scott VanWhy told 69 News that the closest fire hydrant was buried in snow, which delayed crews as they worked to reach the fire. He is reminding residents to clear hydrants on or near their property, leaving at least three feet of space around them.
Officials say their crews faced other challenges with the cold. The Public Works Department was called in to salt the area and improve safety for firefighters. Crews also had to rotate frequently to limit cold exposure and take extra steps to prevent hoses from freezing.
Firefighters were able to get the fire under control fairly quickly.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
