ANGOLA, N.Y. — William G. Houston Middle School and Lake Shore High School are closed today due to a water main break in the Town of Evans.

The district’s elementary schools were not impacted and remained open for the rest of the school day, according to school officials.

Families were given the option to pick up students before 10:15 am For those who remained, buses began departing William G. Houston Middle School at 10:30 am, with Lake Shore High School buses leaving at 10:45 a.m. All students who stayed for busing were transported home using their regular routes.

An Erie County Water Authority spokesperson says crews are working to repair several water main breaks across the Town of Evans.

The break affecting the schools happened near Nicole Lane on Erie Road and was first reported to the town’s dispatch center just after 8:45 Monday morning. Officials say they are still working to determine whether schools will reopen on Tuesday.

Another water main break forced the shutdown of a portion of Kennedy Road near Lennox Street, where crews worked to make repairs. Evans Police Chief says water entered a nearby home, prompting the Lake Erie Beach Volunteer Fire Department to assist with a pump detail.

A third break was also confirmed on East Sterling Avenue.

Officials say the recent stretch of bitter cold and freezing temperatures may be contributing to the increase in water main breaks. In a statement, the Erie County Water Authority says water service is expected to be restored within the next few hours.
