SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Officials in Lackawanna County and the City of Scranton have extended a Code Blue Frigid Weather Alert through Sunday morning as dangerously cold temperatures continue across the region.

The alert, which is issued when temperatures or wind chills are expected to fall below 20 degrees, is designed to protect vulnerable residents, including those experiencing homelessness.

The Code Blue was already in effect beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday and will continue overnight each evening through early Sunday. Officials say overnight wind chills are forecast to range from the low teens down to the single digits during the period.

Emergency shelter options are available throughout the city during the alert. St. Anthony’s Haven on Olive Street is open nightly from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. The Weston Field House on Providence Road opens at 7:30 p.m., and the Community Intervention Center on North 6th Avenue is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours if conditions warrant.

County officials say updates on the Code Blue status will be provided as conditions change, with the next update expected Thursday. Residents are urged to take precautions during the cold snap and to help connect anyone in need with available shelter services.
