While Seven Springs may not be in Italy, the spirit of Olympic competition and fun filled the air Tuesday night as the 48th Pennsylvania Winter Special Olympics officially kicked off.

“We have nearly 250 athletes from across the state of Pennsylvania competing in alpine and snowshoeThis is just a wonderful example of the power of sports, and our athletes get to display what they’re capable of,” said Special Olympics PA Chief Operating Officer Nate Garland.

For the Special Olympic athletes, the opening ceremony marks the start of two days of winter sports competition. From long-time participants to first-timers, the excitement could be felt across the resort.

Special Olympic Athlete Gabriel Davis explained, “This is my first year, so I’m really excited to see all this. My favorite moments are like these. The opening ceremonies, we’re really excited to see the athletes’ faces, the joy and the passion.”

In this week’s games, months of hard work and training will be put to the test as the Special Olympic athletes will compete in snowshoe, snowboarding, and skiing.

“Our athletes have been training. This isn’t a one day come out and have funYou’ve got athletes here over the next two days that are going to be trying to get their personal bests,” said Garland.

“We’re strengthened because we are here for a reason,” added Davis.

Opening day also featured remarks from State Treasurer and Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Stacy Garrity, a polar plunge, a performance by the Somerset Area High School band, and a parade for all athletes and coaches with recognition by local law enforcement.

“Come and see for yourself. These athletes, they aren’t just athletes. They’re leaders. They’re brave. They’re the definition of joy,” said Davis.

The first events of the competition will begin Wednesday 8:30am.
