Tuesday night’s Erie County Council meeting was standing-room-only, with a packed agenda covering a wide range of issues.
One of the most significant items was an ordinance from the Finance Committee proposing the termination of services provided by ICE under its long-standing agreement with the U.S. Marshals Service.
Newly elected Councilman Jim Wertz says now is the right time to reconsider that agreement. “What’s changed is the behavior of ICE. And so, that is what has spawned this conversation and this potential action by County Council.”
Erie County Council Chairman Terry Scutella says the next step is for council to meet with the administration to discuss the proposal in more detail.
Tuesday’s vote was only a first reading of the ordinance, meaning the contract and any future action on it will continue to be reviewed in the coming weeks.
