Born September 5, 1937, he was the son of the late Vincent and Mary (Armitage) Tartella. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 16 years, Rosemary (Helring) Tartella, who passed in 1990.

Francis was a graduate of West Scranton High School, earned an Associates degree at Keystone Junior College and his Bachelor of Arts degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

He had a fulfilling, long career at Mercy Hospital, Scranton. Beginning as a medical technologist, he went on to serve as chemistry section head, chief medical technologist, and ultimately Laboratory Manager from 1984 until his retirement. In addition, Francis was a clinical coordinator and instructor for the Scranton Medical Technology Consortium, where he took great pride in mentoring and educating future medical technologists.

Francis proudly served his country as a hospital corpsman in the United States Navy Reserves, achieving the rank of Senior Chief. He originally retired 1989, but was recalled to active duty during the Gulf War. His final retirement was in 1993. He was a recipient of the Legion of Honor award by the Chapel of the Four Chaplains in recognition of his years of selfless service. Francis was especially proud of his involvement with the Anthracite Heritage Museum. A recognized local expert on coal mining, he was a favorite docent at the museum, known for sharing his knowledge, stories, and passion for the region’s anthracite heritage with visitors of all ages. He most enjoyed tours for school children and the Museum’s summer camp.
