OBITUARY
Francis J. Tartella, 88, of Dunmore, passed away at home on Monday, February 9, 2026 with family by his side.
Born September 5, 1937, he was the son of the late Vincent and Mary (Armitage) Tartella. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 16 years, Rosemary (Helring) Tartella, who passed in 1990.
Francis was a graduate of West Scranton High School, earned an Associates degree at Keystone Junior College and his Bachelor of Arts degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
He had a fulfilling, long career at Mercy Hospital, Scranton. Beginning as a medical technologist, he went on to serve as chemistry section head, chief medical technologist, and ultimately Laboratory Manager from 1984 until his retirement. In addition, Francis was a clinical coordinator and instructor for the Scranton Medical Technology Consortium, where he took great pride in mentoring and educating future medical technologists.
Francis proudly served his country as a hospital corpsman in the United States Navy Reserves, achieving the rank of Senior Chief. He originally retired 1989, but was recalled to active duty during the Gulf War. His final retirement was in 1993. During his distinguished service, he received numerous commendations reflecting his dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence. His devotion to service extended well beyond the military, as he lived a life dedicated to serving his community, his faith, and his family. He was an active member of many local volunteer organizations, including The Knights of Columbus (4th degree) Dunmore Council, The Royal Order of the Landlocked Petty Officers, The Fleet Reserve Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dunmore Rotary Club, and the Anthracite Heritage Museum. He was a recipient of the Legion of Honor award by the Chapel of the Four Chaplains in recognition of his years of selfless service. Francis was especially proud of his involvement with the Anthracite Heritage Museum. A recognized local expert on coal mining, he was a favorite docent at the museum, known for sharing his knowledge, stories, and passion for the region’s anthracite heritage with visitors of all ages. He most enjoyed tours for school children and the Museum’s summer camp.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his four brothers: Vincent Tartella (AKA Scott Walker) and James Tartella, both of Scranton; Col. John Jack Tartella, U.S. Army (Ret.), of Carlisle, Pa; and Andrew Tartella of Lakewood, Wa.
He is survived by his daughter, Mauri Dillon and her husband Rich, of Exton, Pa; his sons, Timothy Tartella, Collin Tartella and Francis Tartella, of Dunmore; and his three cherished grandchildren, Timothy Dillon of Exton, PA, and Lauren Dillon and Kiera Dillon of New York, NY. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Carol Tartella, of Clarks Summit; Eleanor Tartella, of Scranton and Kieran Williams, of Dunmore as well as many nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, February 14 from 10:00 – 11:00 am at St. Paul’s Church 1510 Penn Avenue Scranton, PA. The funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 am.
