BERKS COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — After students of a Berks County high school planned a peaceful walkout to protest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s purchase of a county warehouse, the school district says it will not allow the student action.
A ninth grader from Governor Mifflin High School reached out to CBS 21 on Tuesday regarding a “peaceful walkout to protest the recent actions taken by ICE, especially the purchase of a warehouse in our county,” which was planned for 12:54 p.m. Thursday.
But on Thursday morning, the communications director for the Governor Mifflin School District told CBS 21 that the district would “not be permitting any such actions by out student body” due to safety concerns:
Per our communication with our parents and community this past week, Governor Mifflin School District will not be permitting any such actions by our student body at this time due to safety concerns.
In their initial email, the ninth grader wrote that students had been been planning the protest for weeks with approval from administrators but said after the district received negative emails from parents, there was talk of “punishing students for speaking out.”
“Still, we’re determined to stand up for our right to free speech,” the student wrote.
CBS 21 has reached back out to the district to ask if they had initially approved the walk-out, and if so, what safety concerns prompted them to cancel it.
The student protest comes after ICE purchased a 64-acre warehouse property at 3501 Mountain Road in Upper Bern Township for $87 million on Feb. 2, as reported by CBS Philadelphia.
