The Pennsylvania Department of Health is reminding parents that winter coats can be dangerous when children are secured in car seats.
According to the department, puffy winter coats create extra space under the harness. In a crash, the coat can compress, leaving the straps dangerously loose.
Parents are advised to dress children in thin layers when using a car seat. A blanket can be added over the straps after the child is properly buckled to provide warmth.
