Firefighters and police officers from Wilkes-Barre and Scranton will battle for a trophy and bragging rights Saturday in the inaugural First Responders Hockey Match at Mohegan Arena in Wilkes-Barre Twp.

Officials from Wilkes-Barre, including Mayor George C. Brown, Police Chief Mike Boyle and Fire Chief Jay Delaney, along with Scranton Fire Chief John Judge will be there for the puck drop around 1:10 p.m.

Attendees should prepare for an action-packed day of friendly rivalry and hockey excitement when the Wilkes-Barre fire and police departments take on the Scranton fire and police departments in an epic showdown. Cheer them on as they hit the ice from 1 to 2:30 p.m., showcasing their skills and sportsmanship.

Mayor Brown has donated a trophy for the winning city. He said on Thursday that it’s currently in his office, and he hopes that’s where it will stay for the year.

Part of the ticket sale proceeds will benefit Patriots Cove, a nonprofit in northeastern Pennsylvania founded by a military veteran to empower other injured and ill veterans, first responders and their caregivers to heal and adapt to life after service.

Your ticket not only will support a great cause, but it also includes entry to the evening clash between the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the Syracuse Crunch, promising to be a double feature of adrenaline and teamwork.

Gates for the first responder match open at noon, so come early to secure your spot and enjoy the pre-game buzz.

The Penguins and Crunch will hit the ice at 6 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m.
