COATESVILLE, Pa. (WPVI) – A Pennsylvania man is in custody after allegedly stabbing his infant son.
The suspect was supposed to be arraigned Wednesday, but the judge did not proceed with the hearing because of the man’s reported incoherence in court.
Forty-four-year-old Michael Phillips was escorted by officers outside the Coatesville Police Department late Wednesday evening and taken to Chester County jail.
A Pennsylvania man was arrested after an alleged stabbing attack on his infant son.
Officials said Phillips stabbed his 3-month-old baby in the stomach earlier in the day and then threw him into the snow.
Officers said they were called to the scene Wednesday morning because the baby’s mother was trying to stop Phillips from stabbing her son.
According to the affidavit, police arrived and one of the officers carried the baby to the ambulance. Phillips argued with officers and had blood on his shirt at the time, police said.
Investigators said body camera footage later revealed Phillips saying, “I did it, God. I did it.”
Neighbors said Phillips and the family lived in Millview Apartments for years.
“I called my husband and I said, ‘You’re not going to believe what happened,’” neighbor Danielle Gray said.
The affidavit also stated the baby’s mother told officials that Phillips made comments about sacrificing the child before stabbing him.
That’s when the woman told their 9-year-old to run and get help.
“A good family. Their mom, Dominique, she has two older boys. My son, who is 10, is friends with them. They just had a little baby three months ago,” Gray added.
Phillips was being held until another attempt at an arraignment hearing on Friday. He is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and other charges, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office said.
Officials said the baby was hospitalized but did not have an update on the child’s condition.
