OLD FORGE, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — A well-known Old Forge restaurant that has remained closed since the 2017 murder of its owner is preparing to reopen its doors.
Ghigiarelli’s Restaurant on South Main Street has been shuttered since owner Robert Baron disappeared in January 2017. Baron, 58, was reported missing after failing to return home from the restaurant. Investigators later determined he had been killed during a robbery at the business.
In 2023, skeletal remains discovered near Pagnotti Park were confirmed through DNA testing to be Baron’s. The following year, a Lackawanna County jury convicted Justin Schuback of first-degree murder, burglary and robbery in connection with Baron’s death, bringing long-awaited closure to the case.
Since Baron’s disappearance, the restaurant has sat quiet — a visible reminder of the tragedy that shook the Old Forge community.
Now, in a social media post, Ghigiarelli’s announced plans to reopen. In a message thanking customers for their continued support during the years of closure, the restaurant said the community should watch for updates regarding a takeout reopening date. The post added that the owners look forward to welcoming customers back.
No official opening date has been announced, but the message has sparked optimism among longtime patrons eager to see the familiar storefront active once again.
