Even to Lauren Beamer it seems hard to believe, but the Western Wayne senior reached a historic milestone Tuesday.
The 6-foot-1 All-Region standout slammed down the 1,000th kill of her career in a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-15) win over Lakeland in a Lackawanna League girls volleyball match. She is the first to achieve that mark in program history. Beamer needed nine kills to reach the goal and she finished with 31.
“It almost didn’t feel real,” said Beamer, who will continue her volleyball career at Shippensburg University. “Nobody has ever done that at this school, and I’m not even sure anyone has in the Lackawanna League. I mean, 1,000 is such an insane number. It doesn’t sound real to me.”
Beamer had 120 kills as a freshman, pushed that number to 276 as a sophomore and had 361 kills last season in leading Western Wayne to the District 2 Class 2A final.
She has 285 kills this season and a career-best 42.1 kill percentage.
The 31 kills were a season high, surpassing the 29 she had against North Pocono in a five-set loss Oct. 9.
“This shows how much work I have put into the sport, on and off the court,” Beamer said.
Western Wayne (10-9 overall, 10-5 league) earned the No. 6 seed in the District 2 Class 2A playoffs and will play at No. 3 Dunmore (11-4) in the quarterfinals.
Dunmore edged Western Wayne, 3-2, in their regular-season match.
