The next season of the longest-running live-action sitcom in American history is going to be an important one. As it stands, the contract between Always Sunny and FX networks only goes up to Season 18, and, with so many of the show’s stars busy with their non-Sunny projects, there is a very real chance that this could be the end of Paddy’s Pub and its degenerate proprietors.
The Always Sunny cast has been dropping hints that the end could be nigh for Mac, Dennis, Charlie, Dee and Frank since the end of the well-received Season 17, so, with the future of the show in doubt, we, the fans, want Always Sunny to make sure they’ll go out in style, ideally cavorting with the cream of the crop in Hollywood – and we’re not talking about the owners’ box at the dog track.
Here are the celebrity guests we most want to see in Always Sunny in Season 18 who will ensure that the (possible) final season is a very classy affair.
Carol Kane
The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 finale, “Golden Bachelor Live,” saw Frank choosing the wise-cracking chicken heiress Sam (Carol Kane) to be his TV wife – but, as Dennis’ departure from Philadelphia at the end of Season 12 and unceremonious return in Season 13 demonstrated, the series isn’t really into long-term canon-changes like this.
Nevertheless, it’d be nice to see more of Sam, if only to set up a freaky food-filled love triangle with her, Frank and Artemis.
Kevin Hart
The single most famous and successful comedian from Philadelphia (now that Bill Cosby is almost definitely off the table) should make an appearance on the most beloved sitcom about the City of Brotherly Love.
We get it, a giant mega-star probably doesn’t want to sully his corporate-friendly image by scumming around with degenerates on an offshoot cable network, and Paddy’s Pub doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to diverse clientele. But, sometimes, you just have to do it for your city.
Maria Bamford
As we’ve said before and will say again many times, every comedy show on TV should feature at least one appearance from Maria Bamford. She is simply too dynamic a performer for any casting director to claim that they don’t have a part for her, and Sweet Dee could learn a thing or two about acting and comedy from witnessing the master at work.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Okay, this one is extremely wishful thinking, and the Governator is certainly way outside the price range of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. But, hey, the show got Dolph Lundgren on board for the last Thundergun episode, so why not shoot for the moon?
We all know that the action blockbusters of the 1980s shaped the personalities and worldviews of the Paddy’s Pub Gang, Mac especially. Getting the chance to traumatize the action star with the hardest body of all time would be a dream come true for the Paddy’s Pub security chief.
NOT Ryan Reynolds
Now, look, we’re not the kind of Always Sunny fans who blame the Deadpool star for somehow “ruining” Rob Mac. And, hey, we’re happy that the Always Sunny star formerly known by a real name has found a business and life partner with whom he can galivant around the world acquiring soccer teams.
But Reynolds’ sense of humor is the kind of heckin’ epic comedy that Always Sunny has always frowned upon, and we simply don’t believe that he would debase himself enough to fit in on the show. Given the duo’s track record for crashing each others’ sets, we hope Mac will resist the urge to bring his Wrexham, A.F.C. co-owner to Paddy’s.
The Free Guy star would be better served down at Suds.
