WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE CO. (WOLF) — The first-ever Battle of the Badges turned the ice at Mohegan Arena into a hometown showdown, where rivalry met camaraderie under the roar of cheering fans.
Wilkes-Barre and Scranton first responders played hockey not just to compete, but to support a cause bigger than the game.
Jeremy Cook of the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department explained what both teams were playing for.
“They’re here doing a charity game supporting Patriots Cove. Scranton firefighters, Scranton police vs. Wilkes-Barre firefighters and Wilkes-Barre police officers,” said Cook.
Cook noted the incredible energy of the game and how truly special the event was.
“It’s a great event. It brings the fire and police communities together. Supporting that particular charity that supports us, supports veterans is awesome. Getting us out for a fun activity during the day, and then we’re coming back for the game at night for the Pens,” said Cook.
All the funds raised from the Battle of the Badges game and the later Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins game went to support Patriots Cove, a nonprofit that provides experience, service projects, and retreats to help first responders, veterans, and their caregivers heal in life after service.
