CLIFTON PARK — During Saturday’s Section 2 Division 1 championship meet at Shenendehowa High School the winning team made some history too, as Bethlehem earned its first sectional title since 2001. The Eagles won with a total of 388 points, followed by eight-time defending champion Shenendehowa in second with 289.
“It’s awesome,” Eagles head coach Thomas Kearney said. “It’s going to be a memory they have the rest of their lives … such a great group of kids.”
Bethlehem’s most prolific individual performer was senior Jacob Hershberg, who won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke in state-qualifying times of 51.90 and 51.39, respectively. Bringing home a team banner felt more than rewarding for him.
“We worked our butt off this whole year,” Hershberg said. “Even club season, we were always in there every day, working hard, so it feels good to see all this hard work finally come together.”
The Eagles will send seven athletes to states, including senior Ewan Izzard, who qualified in three races. Izzard earned a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 53.51, swam as the second leg of their 200 freestyle relay squad that won in 1:29.10, and was also the first leg of their 200 medley relay team that won in 1:37.91. He’s excited to see what Bethlehem brings to the table at states in three weeks.
“We’re going for two top-five finishes, so we’ll see,” he said. “We got to have a good time, and we’re going to keep the energy going from this ‘til states.”
Winning the Division 2 team title was Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk/Greenville, which trailed defending champion Glens Falls by just a point heading into the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay. The merged squad won the race in 3:31.79, beating the Black Bears by less than two seconds for a winning point total of 360, while Glens Falls finished with 355. Head coach Kyle Kearney was ecstatic for the team’s first banner in his 20-year tenure.
“Glens Falls is the king of the 400-free relay every year, but I had a lot of confidence in our kids,” he said. “That same group had swam at one of our invitations earlier this year and had a great swim, so I just was hoping and praying that they were going to be able to hold it out again.”
Swimming the fourth and final leg of this race was junior Brett Hungerford, who knew what he’d accomplished the second he exited the pool.
“It was one of the greatest moments in my life,” he said. “Just proving to everyone that I could do it.”
Just one race earlier, Hungerford won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.47. Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk/Greenville’s other individual victor was another Hungerford, freshman Cole, who won the 500-yard freestyle in a personal-record 5:15.48.
