The best boys basketball teams in the Lackawanna League claimed division championships and now set their sights on earning district gold and PIAA playoff berths.

Abington Heights is the Division I champion and the No. 1 seed for the District 2 Class 5A playoffs. Riverside won Division II and is the top seed in Class 3A. Elk Lake captured the Division III title and is the No. 3 seed in Class 3A.

Nothing is official until the District 2 committee puts a stamp on it, however there are no additional games scheduled for teams, according to piaad2.org. Nonleague games do factor into a power rating, so some adjustments could be made before Monday’s meeting.

Based on the standings posted, pairings can be projected.

The playoffs in Class 5A and Class 4A in boys basketball start Tuesday at the sites of the higher-seeded teams.

Abington Heights (17-5), the three-time defending champion, and Crestwood are the top two seeds and earned byes and home games in the semifinals that are scheduled for Saturday.

On Tuesday, in the quarterfinals, No. 6 Nanticoke Area (3-19) is at No. 3 Pittston Area (11-11). The two Wyoming Valley Conference teams have played twice this season, with Pittston Area winning both games.

Fifth-seeded North Pocono (4-18) plays at No. 4 Wallenpaupack (8-14). Both teams competed in the Lackawanna Division I and played twice in the regular season. Wallenpaupack beat the Trojans twice, with the second meeting being a 43-42 nailbiter Feb. 9.

Also Wednesday, the Class 4A quarterfinals will be played. There are four teams each from the Lackawanna League and the WVC in the tournament.

No. 4 Valley View (17-5), the defending champion that reached the PIAA semifinals last season, is at home against No. 5 Hanover Area (13-9).

No. 8 Mid Valley (7-15) will open at No. 1 Dallas (20-3). No. 7 Honesdale (8-14) is at No. 2 Scranton Prep (17-5).

The Class 3A championship game is Thursday, Feb. 26, at 8 p.m. at Mohegan Arena.
