Erie police suspect a roving band of thieves are responsible for a series of vehicle break-ins in areas on the city’s south end late Feb. 13 and early Feb. 14.
A number of vehicles were entered and a variety of items were taken, but an exact amount was unknown Feb. 16 as officers were still taking reports, Erie police Deputy Chief Ken Kensill said.
Police had no suspects in custody in the thefts Feb. 16.

Kensill said it appears the suspects were in a vehicle and were driving around. Some would jump out of their vehicle and check car doors, and if they were locked they would move on until finding an unlocked door, he said.
Areas hit by the thieves on Erie’s upper east and west sides included portions of Beech Avenue and Parade Street, according to Kensill.
Kensill asked residents to make sure their vehicles are locked and to keep an eye out for and report to the police any suspicious activity they might see in their neighborhoods.
