A GoFundMe campaign created to help a Northampton County family who lost their house to a fire Feb. 8 has raised tens of thousands of dollars.
The Rieger family of Hanover Township has been in temporary housing since then and are still searching for their dog, Daisy, who disappeared during the blaze.
As of Monday afternoon, about $65,000 of the $70,000 goal has been raised from 600 donations in a week since the page was set up.
Lori Boyle of Bethlehem is the organizer of the account.
“They are incredibly grateful that everyone made it out safely, but the loss is so overwhelming,” Boyle wrote on the donation page. “We are continuing to take every effort to find their beloved dog, Daisy. The funds raised will go immediately for temporary housing, clothing, food, etc. As they begin the long process of recovery, any support will help to take the next steps forward.”
Crews were called to the 400 block of Sugar Maple Court the night of Feb. 8 for a report of a house fire, according to Hanover Township Fire Company Chief Scott Van Why. Photos taken by a freelance photographer showed flames coming from the back of the home, located on a cul-de-sac.
Two residents and a firefighter were injured while crews handled a blaze during very cold weather. The cold and recent snowfall complicated efforts to fight the fire, Van Why said.
