Erie County leaders are working on an Extreme Temperature Weather Plan.

Last summer, more than 60 community volunteers took part in a citizen science heat mapping campaign. The results are helping county officials see what parts of the region, and what people, are more at risk during a heat wave.

That study and community input gathered at a public input session Monday is helping put the finishing touches on the plan.

“More people in the United States die every year from extreme heat than any other kind of weather event. More than flooding, more than hurricanes, more than tornadoes,” said Josh Wilson, Erie County Department of Environmental Planning. “Heat is very deadly. We are not used to it. We are not prepared. That is why the county is really trying to step up.”
