Defending champ: Abington Heights.

Seeds: 1-Abington Heights (17-5); 2-Crestwood (16-8); 3-Pittston Area (11-11); 4-Wallenpaupack (8-14); 5-North Pocono (4-18); 6-Nanticoke Area (3-19).

Players to watch: Jordan Shaffer (AH), 19.9 points per game; Andrew Kettel (AH), 14.8; Ayden Agapito (CRE), 15.6; Miles Metz (CRE), 10.3; Lucas LoPresto (PA), 12.8; Nick VanBuskirk (WAL), 11.4; Cole West (NP), 14.0.

Noteworthy: Abington Heights is the Lackawanna Division I champion. The Comets have won 13 straight games after enduring a three-game losing streak against nonleague opponents Berks Catholic, Pocono Mountain West, and Cardinal O’Hara. Abington Heights senior Jordan Shaffer is a career 1,000-point scorer. Crestwood split two games against Pittston Area, swept two from Nanticoke Area, and beat North Pocono this season. Both quarterfinal games are rematches from the regular season. Pittston Area defeated Nanticoke Area, 56-27, and 55-33. Wallenpaupack beat North Pocono, 49-39, and 43-42.

Bottom Line: Abington Heights has won three straight District 2 Class 5A titles and is playing its best basketball at the right time of the year. The Comets are physical. They can go nine players deep into the roster and get plenty of contributions. They swept two meetings against Scranton Prep, the No. 2 seed for the District 2 Class 4A playoffs. Crestwood went 2-1 against teams from the Lackawanna Division I. The Comets defeated West Scranton, 56-52, and North Pocono, 61-41, and lost to Scranton, 56-47. Abington Heights went 6-0, winning by an average of 22.2 points per game against those three teams.

Noteworthy: Valley View and Scranton Prep have been regular opponents in the District 2 Class 4A final. The Cougars earned the championship last season. Scranton Prep has won seven of nine championships since the PIAA moved to six classifications in 2016-17. Dallas last won a Class 4A championship in 2022. Dallas defeated Scranton, 66-46, and Abington Heights, 64-46, in games against Lackawanna Division I opponents.

Bottom Line: Dallas, which won the WVC playoff tournament, has some impressive wins this season, including Bethlehem Liberty, Abington Heights, and two each over Wilkes-Barre Area and Hazleton Area. That makes the Mountaineers the favorite. Scranton Prep, which lost twice to Abington Heights, is hoping a nonleague schedule that featured Cathedral Prep, Devon Prep, Cardinal O’Hara, and Liberty has it prepared for the postseason. Valley View will be without leading scorer Cash Roe, but the Cougars had an important win against Scranton to close out the regular season in the Lackawanna League. Wyoming Area is a dark horse. The Warriors can score, and their only losses were to Old Forge and Pittston Area.
