Philadelphia, PA (February 16, 2026) — Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson (Second District) today issued the following statement in response to the ruling by Judge Cynthia Rufe ordering the restoration of the President’s House slavery exhibit on Independence Mall:

“I strongly support the Court’s decision to restore the President’s House slavery exhibit. Judge Cynthia Rufe made it clear that historical truth cannot be dismantled or rewritten, and that the federal government does not have the authority to erase or alter facts simply because it has control over a national site.

“The President’s House exhibit at Independence National Historical Park tells an essential and honest story about slavery in the shadow of Independence Hall — a story that is central to our nation’s founding and to Philadelphia’s history.

“We cannot let President Donald Trump whitewash African American history. Black history is American history.

“The City of Philadelphia sought this injunction to protect the integrity of this important site, and today’s decision ensures that the exhibit will be fully restored and preserved for residents and visitors alike.

“Philadelphia remains committed to telling the full, honest history of our nation — not just the comfortable parts, but the complete truth.”
