A dramatic ice rescue unfolded early Sunday morning in Erie.

Around 2:30 a.m., firefighters were called to 1 Ore Dock Road after a person fell through the ice near the port. Crews quickly located the victim, who was freezing and unable to escape on their own, about 500 to 800 feet offshore.

Firefighters in dry suits and an ice rescue boat worked together with the U.S. Coast Guard to reach the victim. The person was pulled to safety using tether lines and a ladder system, then taken to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

One firefighter was also injured during the rescue and was hospitalized. The victim’s condition has not been released.
