The third NEPA Comic Con will focus on “Star Wars” this weekend, featuring two actresses who wore iconic costumes on television sets and a voice actor behind hundreds of roles.
Fans won’t recognize Christine Galey, but her R2-D2 costume is known in all galaxies. Galey, the first woman to play the role, appeared in the series “The Book of Boba Fett.”
NEPA Comic Con runs Friday through Sunday at the Days Inn by Wyndham in Dickson City, with meet and greets, a cosplay runway and art and collectibles for sale.
Organizer Eric Kropiewnicki expects a scene straight out of the cantina where Han Solo shot a bounty hunter.
Actress Susanna Malak will appear at NEPA Comic Con. (COURTESY OF NEPA COMIC CON)
“It’s just so crazy, how people get into all the stuff that they get into,” he said. “It’s pretty fascinating.” He owns the Moon Tavern & Entertainment Complex at the hotel.
Groups of cosplayers — people serious about creating and wearing costumes — will portray “Star Wars” characters and others.
Admission ranges from $5 for an advance ticket Sunday to a $100 all-access weekend pass.
Galey said the R2-D2 costume doesn’t feel claustrophobic. “It felt great, just to be R2-D2,” she said. She was not particularly a “Star Wars” fan before being cast for small appearances as several creatures. She studied the first movie to learn the droid’s movements.
The other “Star Wars” actress on the schedule is Susanna Malak. She’s honored to be part of “Star Wars,” despite feeling “very confined” in some costumes. She has appeared as various creatures on “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett.”
“There’s been times that I sat there and had to talk myself through it,” Malak said. “Because I wanted to quit. It’s just claustrophobic.”
Other guests include voice actor Trevor Devall, who has worked on “Star Wars” animation and other productions.
The first event is the party for weekend pass holders Friday. Hours on Saturday are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with cosplay karaoke later in the evening. On Sunday, the hours are noon to 4 p.m.
