ERIE — Winter months are among the most challenging times of year to maintain a stable blood supply. The Community Blood Bank (CBB) is urging donors to step up and help ensure local hospitals have the blood they need to care for patients.
“Seasonal illnesses, winter weather and canceled appointments often lead to fewer donations, while the need for blood remains constant,” said Raven Edinger, mobile drive coordinator lead.
Throughout February, the Community Blood Bank will host blood drives across the region, encouraging donors to give when it is needed most. By donating during the winter months, community members help ensure patients undergoing surgeries, cancer treatments, trauma care and emergency procedures continue to receive lifesaving blood products. Donors are invited to give at the Erie Donor Center, 2646 Peach St., Erie, or at an upcoming mobile blood drive in the community:
• Holy Redeemer Church in Warren from noon to 5:30 p.m. today, 11 Russell St., Warren;
• Titusville YMCA, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, 528 W. Main St., Titusville; and
• Valley View Mennonite Church, 2 to 7:30 p.m. on March 2, 24313 PA 89 & 77, Spartansburg.
To thank donors for making the effort to donate during a critical time of year, all presenting donors at the Erie Donor Center or at mobile blood drives throughout February will receive a limited-edition sweatshirt.
Call 814-596-3395 to schedule an appointment to donate. Appointments are encouraged to reduce wait time but are not required.
Community Blood Bank partners with hospitals in Northwest Pennsylvania and Western New York to provide blood for patients in need. If you are at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and are in good general health, you may be eligible to donate blood. Donors must have a valid photo ID to donate. Prior to donating, those giving blood should eat a good, solid meal and drink at least 18 ounces of water. To learn more or to find a blood drive, visit www.fourhearts.org or call 877-842-0631.
