In honor of Black History Month, Erie News Now is honoring the Jubilee celebrations of the Selma Bridge Crossing in Selma, Alabama.
In March of 2025, our Elspeth Mizner and Renata Stiehl from our sister station in WENY in Elmira, New York traveled to Selma for the 60th anniversary of the Bridge Crossing in Alabama.
Through the weekend, they attended youth parades, community festivals, breakfasts and the commemorative March across the Edmund Pettis Bridge on March 7.
They met people who were inspired of the people who walked before them decades ago.
Brisha Brishelle was one of those people from the organization, 1000 Women Strong who attended the celebrations. She said, “Authentic compassion from a very authentic place, not from a political space, not from a them they space, but a truly united space. And if we unite because if we can’t do anything without each other. And that is black people as well as white people.”
Building Bridges Together, the half-hour special about the jubilee celebration in Selma airs Wednesday night on WICU at 7:00.
