A suspect in an incident in Binghamton led police on a high-speed pursuit into Pennsylvania.
The chase started on the south side of the city of Binghamton around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday after several shots reportedly were fired.
Police said the suspect sped away in a black 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe after as many as a dozen gunshots were heard.
The pursued vehicle wound up on the Brandywine Highway before heading onto Interstate 81. It reportedly was passing vehicles on the shoulder of the highway as it eluded police.
Law enforcement agencies in Broome County alerted Pennsylvania State Police as the sport utility vehicle continued south into Susquehanna County.
According to WBRE, the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed during the chase “nearly causing multiple crashes” before striking a tractor-trailer.
Pennsylvania State Police tried unsuccessfully to use spike strips to stop the pursued vehicle into Lackawanna County.
Troopers used a “pit maneuver” to disable the SUV and end the chase. The suspect then was taken into custody. It was not immediately known whether anyone was hurt during the pursuit or after it concluded.
Police were said to be seeking a search warrant for the Sante Fe.
Binghamton police Tuesday afternoon provided no information about why the suspect was being sought or what charges he would face in the city.
