Upper Darby police are searching for two males they believe to be juveniles involved in a hit-and-run crash Friday morning that sent a man to a hospital with serious injuries.

“What we know is a four-door white Kia came down Chestnut and attempted to make a right hand turn onto 69th street,” said Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt. “It did not make it because of excessive speed, hit another car and then kind of went airborne across the sidewalk and hit a pedestrian that was walking down 69th street in front of the IHOP there at Chestnut.”

Bernhardt said the pedestrian was alive but seriously injured, suffering at least one broken leg and additional injuries. He was still at the hospital receiving treatment late Friday and police did not have an update on his condition, but Bernhardt said the driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

The driver and passenger in the Kia fled ran, Bernhardt said. The Kia turned out to have been stolen from the Drexel Hill section of the township at some point overnight and the owners were not even aware it was missing until they were contacted by police.

Bernhardt said the investigation is ongoing and police do not yet know why the Kia was speeding. He said police have gotten images of both males from surveillance cameras in the area that he hopes to be able to get facial recognition on.

Bernhardt said those images would be released once they are cleaned up so police can hopefully get some assistance from the public in identifying one or both of the males. He said police at this point believe they may be juveniles, but they do at least appear to be young males.
