PITTSBURGH, PA — Crews have begun preparing the Panther Hollow Bridge in Oakland for construction. The bridge repair contractor is installing safety infrastructure, according to Mayor Corey O’Connor and the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI).

Repairs on the bridge are scheduled to start in the next two weeks. Construction is anticipated to continue through August 2026.

Contractors are currently installing a work platform under the bridge. This platform is designed to prevent debris from falling below the structure. The repair work will include truss retrofits, drainage system improvements, and general maintenance.

The Panther Hollow Bridge, which connects Oakland with Squirrel Hill, closed in October 2024. The closure followed concerns raised during a routine safety inspection.

Following the inspection, a rope-access inspection and structural analysis identified the necessary repairs. DOMI then developed a comprehensive repair plan with bridge inspectors and design engineers.

The current vehicle detour will remain in place for the duration of the construction. Bicycle and pedestrian access will be maintained across and under the bridge, with temporary interruptions for equipment and material movement.

The bridge will temporarily open in July for the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. This will be followed by rolling closures into August.

Mosites Construction is performing the planned repairs. The project is expected to cost $2.23 million.
