PITTSTON, LUZERNE CO. (WOLF) — Ash Wednesday brought large numbers of parishioners to churches throughout the Pittston area as the community marked the start of Lent, the 40 day period of reflection and preparation leading up to Easter. Father Joseph Elston, pastor of Our Lady of the Eucharist Parish, says the day carries deep meaning for many Christians across Northeast Pennsylvania.
Elston explains that Ash Wednesday signals the beginning of a season focused on prayer, charity, and renewed spiritual commitment.
“Every year, Ash Wednesday starts the Lenten season. It is a season of prayer, repentance, and almsgiving. It is kind of a more intensive period of spirituality and spiritual growth, and for our Catholic community, it is a big day. It is a great time of grace and opportunity for deepening our prayer lives and our spiritual lives,” Elston said.
The Pittston area is served by three Catholic parishes: St. John the Evangelist, Our Lady of the Eucharist, and St. Joseph Marello. Elston says all three saw strong turnout throughout the day, with hundreds of worshippers attending services across the region.
He notes that northeastern Pennsylvania has a strong religious tradition, and many Christian denominations recognize Ash Wednesday as the beginning of the Lenten journey.
Easter falls on Sunday, April 5, this year. Elston expects participation to remain steady as parishioners take part in services, fasting, and moments of reflection during the weeks ahead.
