While we’re all craving the arrival of spring in 31 days (yes, we’re counting), the region is experiencing a major thaw, as towers of snow and frozen icicles melt and drip away. Soon, the most active time of year for the real estate market will be upon us, so we’re helping you get a jumpstart on your search.
For the next installment of our “Your Move” real estate series, we’re heading through the Liberty Tunnels just 4 miles south of Downtown to Brookline.
Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer, relocating to the Burgh from a different time zone or ready to put down roots in the region, Brookline can offer a lot in terms of housing stock and access to neighborhood amenities. Think city living with a dense suburban feel and a close-knit community with a rich history.
Brookline is also a great place to look if your homebuying search has been focused on the East End, but you’re feeling priced out of neighborhoods like Lawrenceville, Squirrel Hill, Shadyside and Regent Square.
More than 13,000 residents call the South Hills neighborhood home within 2 square miles. A central attraction is Brookline Boulevard, a vibrant business district punctuated by local businesses spanning approximately 1 mile along a flat, walkable corridor. There’s an international flair that draws diners and shoppers from all over the city: You can’t miss the homemade Mediterranean cuisine at Pitaland cafe, bakery and market, the street tacos at Las Palmas Carniceria and the groceries at Brookline Halal Market.
Living in Brookline means you’re just a stroll away from your favorite latte at 802 Bean Co. or spending time at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s local branch. From Deluca’s Bread Co., The Kickstand Sandwich Shop and Red’s Good News, to Sparkledragon’s Magical Emporium and Boulevard Ice Cream, the bustling boulevard is lined with dozens of spots enhancing daily life. Everything residents need is there, including the post office, drugstore and a host of boutiques, bars, salons and services.
Brookline’s location can’t be beat, with its convenient access to Downtown Pittsburgh, public transportation, the airport and major highways. Plus, Brookline is sandwiched between several city and South Hills communities worth exploring, from Beechview and Dormont to Carrick and Mt. Lebanon. There is also close proximity to stadiums, cultural venues and riverfront trails.
A community anchor along Pioneer Avenue is Joseph F. Moore Park, a popular gathering place for families, residents and sports enthusiasts of all ages. In 2022, the olympic-size Moore Park pool completed a massive $900,000 renovation project. Opened in 1940, the historic site boasts a plaque marking the pool bathhouse as a Public Works Administration New Deal project. Nestled in the rolling hills, the municipal recreation hub houses basketball, tennis and pickleball courts, ballfields, a playground, spray fountain and splash pond.
The neighborhood is home to community, civic and commerce groups like Brookline Together, the Brookline Chamber of Commerce and South Pittsburgh Development Corporation (Taste of Brookline).
The Brookline Farmers Market is open June through November at Cannon Memorial Park, while the Tuesday Food Trucks series runs from March to November in front of Steel City Craft Emporium. A beloved staple drawing participants from all over the region is the Brookline Breeze. Set for Saturday, Aug. 8, the challenging 5K fitness run/walk traverses the area’s scenic hills. Additional neighborhood events include the Community Yard Sale, Breezefest, Bowling League, Halloween Parade and Brookline Lights Up celebration.
