Keystone College used a run midway through the second half to pull away from St. Mary’s College of Maryland for an 80-71 win in the first round of the United East Conference men’s basketball playoffs.
Tied at 56, Ahmodrion Jones’ 3-pointer sparked a 10-2 burst that gave Keystone a 66-58 lead with 6:37 left. St. Mary’s, the No. 7 seed, never got closer than six points the rest of the way.
Jden Golding led the No. 10-seeded Giants (8-18) with 29 points on 11-for-24 shooting. Jones finished with 22 points.
On Saturday, Keystone faces No. 2 seed Penn State-Brandywine in the United East quarterfinals.
Wilkes 77, Scranton 74: At Scranton, Lucas Lesko scored 24 points, including a pair of baskets in the final minute to lift Wilkes University over the University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference battle at the John Long Center.
A basket by Josias Carbon with 1:11 remaining gave Scranton a 74-73 lead. But Lesko scored off a layup with 55 seconds left. Then after a Scranton miss, Lesko hit a jumper with 11 seconds remaining to put Wilkes ahead by three. The Royals missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with two seconds to go.
Jack Argento added 23 points for the Colonels (10-7 league, 15-9 overall).
Sammy Tornabene led the Royals (12-5, 19-5) with 23 points. Brendan Carr followed with 14 points, Nick Ruisi netted 11 points and Carbon scored 10.
Scranton’s loss, coupled with Catholic’s 71-68 win over Elizabethtown, clinches the regular-season title and No. 1 seed for the playoffs for the Cardinals. The Royals are tied for second in the Landmark standings with Drew University. They visit Catholic on Saturday in the regular-season finale, while Drew heads to Susquehanna. Wilkes is in fourth place, while Elizabethtown, Moravian and Susquehanna are tied for fifth at 9-8. The top six teams qualify for the playoffs with the first two teams earning first-round byes.
Neumann 84, Marywood 76: At Aston, Neumann used a 46-point second half to overcome a three-point halftime deficit and defeat Marywood University in an Atlantic East Conference game.
Shilo Bivins led Marywood with 21 points. Michel Loftin added 16, Noah Perry contributed 13 and Collin Himmelberg finished with 12 for the Pacers (6-7, 13-11).
Women’s basketball
At Scranton, Kaci Kranson scored 20 points and the No. 2-ranked University of Scranton rolled past Wilkes University, 93-42, in a Landmark Conference game at the John Long Center.
Elizabeth Bennett added 14 points for the Lady Royals (17-0, 24-0) and Meghan Lamanna had 12 points.
Coupled with Catholic’s 58-56 loss to Elizabethtown, Scranton clinched the regular-season title and No. 1 seed for the playoffs.
Scranton 60, Neumann 53, OT: At Scranton, Marywood University clinched an Atlantic East Conference playoff berth with an overtime victory over Neumann University at Insalaco Arena.
Olivia Ciullo hit the second of two foul shots with four seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 49 and force overtime. Marywood scored the first six points of the extra session, then hit five free throws in the final 25 seconds to seal the win.
Anyah Ortiz led the Pacers (8-5, 13-11) with 16 points. Mia Blume added 13 points and nine rebounds. Megan Cavoli had 11 points and Ciullo finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Men’s lacrosse
At Scranton, the University of Scranton edged Muhlenberg College, 9-8, in a nonleague game at Weiss Field for its first win of the season.
Cooper Roberts had a career-high three goals for the Royals (1-1).
Marywood 9, Wilkes 6: At Scranton, Marywood University scored the final four goals to rally for its first win of the season in a nonleague game.
Ben Meighan led the Pacers (1-1) with three goals and two assists. Ricky Strobel added three goals and one assist.
