A Braddock man filmed himself on a cellphone video accusing a “childhood friend” of plotting to “do something to me” moments before police say that friend fatally shot him outside a Pittsburgh bar last month.
In six expletive-laced videos, Kevin Venson, 55, insulted and threatened Sean Carter on Sept. 12 after a confrontation inside Denise & Earl’s, a bar on Homewood’s Frankstown Avenue, according to a criminal complaint.
“You got a death wish — and you gonna meet death, cuz,” Venson said in the final video, a nine-second clip time-stamped 9:46 p.m.
Just one minute later, Carter, 56, of Clairton shot Venson once in the neck, police said. Venson died two hours later at the hospital.
Last month, Pittsburgh police charged Carter with homicide but did not announce his arrest.
On Wednesday afternoon, the alleged gunman was set to appear for a preliminary hearing in City Court but the case was postponed until December.
Video footage showed Carter entering Denise & Earl’s at 9:06 p.m. Sept. 12, the complaint said. After a security guard patted him down, Carter greeted numerous people and walked to the back of the bar.
Around 15 minutes later, Venson walked over and greeted Carter, the complaint said. They shook hands and briefly spoke. Then, Venson turned away and talked with other people.
Less than a minute later, Venson walked to the front of the bar followed by Carter. When Venson stopped walking, Carter bumped into him, the complaint said.
Carter “became animated,” according to police. He yelled at Venson, “looked angry and was posturing over Venson as he spoke to him.” Carter “moved very close to Venson” as he screamed.
Venson returned to the back of the bar, the complaint said.
Carter left Denise & Earl’s around 9:25 p.m., according to the complaint. Venson left separately minutes later.
When Venson stepped onto the sidewalk outside the bar, Carter started following him “quickly and aggressively,” the complaint said.
Both men walked out of camera view — across Frankstown Avenue toward Newman Way, the complaint said.
Carter then walked back into view alone and tried to reenter the bar, police said. A security guard would not let him enter.
Five minutes later, an unidentified woman brought Carter a white Styrofoam food container, the complaint said. Carter put the container in the bed of his black Ford truck and stood for several minutes near the pickup.
During that time, Venson recorded the videos, where he spoke as he filmed the front of the bar from a nearby bush.
At 9:46 p.m., police said Carter walked back toward Newman Way. A single shot was fired there a minute later, according to the ShotSpotter gunfire detection system.
Cameras did not appear to record the shooting.
Police found Venson bleeding on a wood pile from a gunshot wound. He died at UPMC Presbyterian hospital at 11:43 p.m.
On videos recovered from Venson’s phone, Venson mentioned Carter at least twice by name minutes before the shooting, police said.
“Sean Carter was running his mouth. He trying to create some people to go against me and do something to me,” Venson recorded himself saying.
“I was right outside the bar — I could’ve killed his (expletive),” Venson said in the video, according to the complaint. “I chose to take the right road.”
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office did not publicly identify Venson as a homicide victim until Oct. 15, more than a month later.
The office did not respond to inquiries about the delay.
Pittsburgh police charged Carter Sept. 29 with homicide and a firearms count. He was arrested Oct. 7 and denied bail.
Carter’s attorney was not listed Wednesday in court records.
