Historic Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Is Home To 2025’s Most Charming Main Street In The U.S.
Bethlehem, PA, is a town with 79,453 residents, spanning 19.46 square miles across Northampton and Lehigh counties. It’s the second-biggest city in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania. In April 2025, editors and readers of USA Today named the town’s Main Street as the most charming in the U.S., praised for being “super walkable” and for its diverse gastronomic selection.
Main Street is the heart of the Historic Moravian Bethlehem District, built by its original Moravian settlers, a Protestant group hailing from Europe. They founded Bethlehem in 1741, building community sites on Main Street that still exist today, like the Moravian Book Shop and the Central Moravian Church—home to the oldest town clock tower in America (b. 1746).
In the 19th century, Bethlehem’s Main Street became a civic center during the Industrial Era. In the 1860s, Bethlehem Iron Company was founded, later becoming the second-largest steel producer in the U.S. after its expansion as Bethlehem Steel Corporation in 1904.
The town’s industrial modernization led to the construction of newer architecture on Main Street, including the continuous operation of the Beaux Arts-style Hotel Bethlehem in 1922. Unfortunately, the town’s economy collapsed, driving people to leave, when Bethlehem Steel shut down operations in 1995 and filed for bankruptcy in 2001.
The historic Moravian Church Settlements in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania became the 26th UNESCO World Heritage Site in the U.S. in 2024.
