CLARION COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — The town of New Bethlehem is on high-alert as melting snow and ice has caused an ice jam along a local creek, prompting area roadways to be shut down.

Emergency officials in Clarion County say local water levels have risen at least a foot or two as warmer temperatures continue to melt what is left of the snow and ice.

Photos from our crew show emergency responders working along Brookville Street to contain any potential flooding.

Earlier this week, 6 News spoke with officials in Jefferson County as they too are preparing for potential ice jams along their local waterways.

According to our 6 News severe weather team, ice jams are created when large chunks of ice pile-up on a river or creek, preventing the proper flow of the water.

The blockage can then significantly reduce the flow of the waterway, leading to localized flooding of roads and property near the river or creek.
