The Reading Area Water Authority is asking customers to voluntarily reduce their water use by 10% to 15%.

The authority operates and maintains the water system for Reading, and North Heidelberg, Cumru and Kenhorst townships, and portions of Bern and Bethel townships.

The authority on its website said the request follows a move by the state to place Berks County under a drought warning.

The U.S. Drought Monitor map shows most of Berks in the “severe” drought category as of Thursday.

Officials said the following nonessential water uses are prohibited during this restriction:

• Watering of lawns and outdoor areas.

• Watering golf courses.

• Washing vehicles, paved surfaces or other outdoor areas.

• Filling or topping off pools.

• Serving water in eating places unless specifically requested.

The authority said it will notify customers when the restrictions are lifted.
