Brendan Bell shot a 4-under 68, with four birdies and 14 pars, to lead Scranton Prep to its second straight PIAA Class 2A golf title on a cold and windy Wednesday on the White Course at Penn State.
The Cavaliers also set a state tournament record, shooting a 6-under 282 to defeat Cathedral Prep by eight strokes and beat Peters Twp.’s mark of 284 set in 2023.
“After last year, they knew that it was going to be hard to repeat, and a lot of the kids were going to be gunning for our team,” Scranton Prep coach Christi Dorece said. “So, they weren’t going to roll over and let that happen. They worked really hard in the offseason all summer long, they played in tons of tournaments, tried to get tournament ready. Took lots of lessons, some of the kids were in the gym. They didn’t take it lightly, that’s for sure.”
Cole Powell, who captured the individual state crown Tuesday, shot 2-under 70, Ben Boyanoski carded a 1-under 71 and Guy Rothery added a 1-over 73 for the Cavaliers.
“We performed incredibly,” Bell said. “The conditions were not easy at all, and we just battled through the conditions and we got the job done.”
Bell certainly didn’t let to conditions bother him, as he started his clean round with pars on the first five holes, and he birdied the par-5 sixth.
“I putted very good,” Bell said. “I had two crucial par saves on the first and fourth holes. I made about a 12-footer on both holes for a par. Other than that, I hit 17 greens in regulation, so it was relatively stress free and I just got those four birdies in there with some relatively easy birdie putts.”
He shot a 3-under 33 on the back nine, birdieing the par-5 10th, par-5 13th and par-4 17th. On the par-5 10th, the sophomore hit a drive down the left side, hit 8-iron to about 40 feet and two-putted for birdie. On the par-5 13th, he hit another drive down the left side, laid up to about 70 yards, hit his approach to 10 feet and sunk the putt. On the par-4 17th, he hit 3-wood off the tee, and stuck his 70-yard approach to two feet.
“Brendan has always strived for a bogey-free round, and his last round was a bogey-free round, which is a huge milestone in a competitive golfer’s hat,” Dorece said. “And then to have another bogey-free round, I think I’m more proud of him for the bogey-free round because he can make birdies. There’s no doubt about that. But to not have any bogeys and blemish free is amazing. It’s unbelievable and it’s a huge confidence booster for him going into next year.”
Powell birdied the par-5 sixth, par-4 11th and par-5 18th, while adding 14 pars and one bogey.
Boyanoski birdied the par-4 second, the par-5 third, the par-5 10th and the par-3 16th to go with his 11 pars and three bogeys.
Rothery had the most birdies for the Cavaliers, with birdies on the par-5 sixth, par-4 eighth, par-5 10th, par-5 13th and par-4 17th.
“They’re all friends,” Dorece said. “They play a lot of golf together, they all root each other on, they’re all there for each other. It’s healthy competition within the team, more so to push each other.”
Bobby Stott added a 5-over 77 with birdies on the par-5 sixth, par-4 ninth, par-4 11th and par-4 14th. He shot 1 under, after carding a quadruple bogey and a double-bogey on the first two holes.
“We added a couple good players. Obviously, Bobby Stott was a huge addition as a freshman,” Dorece said. “I’m so proud of him, he was nervous as all hell to start. And after that kind of a start, he was 1-under par, so that’s a huge tribute to him being able to settle down.”
Madelyn Bevan shot an 85 to lead Tunkhannock to a sixth-place finish in the Class 2A girls tournament.
Meyer Sebastian shot a 1-under 71 to lead Abington Heights in the Class 3A boys tournament, as the Comets placed eighth.
Brianna Moffatt shot an 87 to lead Abington Heights to a seventh-place finish in the Class 3A girls tournament.
