The Scranton Prep boys golf team left the rest of the PIAA Class 2A team golf championship field in the dust, shooting 6-under par to cruise to a second straight state championship at Penn State on Wednesday.
The Cavaliers were the only team in the eight-school field to finish under par; second-place Cathedral Prep was eight strokes behind at t2-over.
It’s the second state championship in as many days for Scranton Prep golf, after Cole Powell won the individual state title on Tuesday.
The Wyoming Valley Conference’s lone team to reach a state tournament, the Tunkhannock girls team, finished in sixth place in the Class 2A Girls championship.
Abington Heights secured the state spots from District 2 in both the boys and girls’ Class 3A tournaments. The Comet girls finished in seventh place and the boys took eighth place.
FIELD HOCKEY
Wyoming Valley West 2, Honesdale 1 (OT)
Ava Mullery sent the Spartans through to the Class 3A district final, with her overtime goal defeating Honesdale in the semis.
The winner was assisted by Kenzie O’Donnell. Miley Cunningham had the team’s first goal, assisted by Valorie Yelen.
Valley West will take on Wilkes-Barre Area in the district championship at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lake-Lehman.
Crestwood 7, Shikellamy 0
Callie Koons and Ally George had two goals each as top-seeded Crestwood rolled to a win in the District 2 Class 2A semifinals.
Addison Korpusik, Erin Cavanaugh and Alex Geiger added a goal each for the Comets.
Crestwood will advance to the District 2 Class 2A championship on Monday, taking on Dallas at 6:30 p.m. at Wyoming Valley West’s Spartan Stadium.
With District 2 receiving two state bids in Class 2A, Wednesday’s win also locks up one of those spots for Crestwood.
Dallas 1, Abington Heights 0
The Mountaineers scored a first-quarter goal and held on the rest of the way to beat Abington Heights in the other Class 2A semifinal.
Dallas will face Crestwood 6:30 p.m. Monday at Wyoming Valley West’s Spartan Stadium for the district title, and has punched its ticket to states by earning the other of District 2’s two state tournament bids in Class 2A.
BOYS SOCCER
Wilkes-Barre Area 6, West Scranton 0
Johnny Mendola scored a hat trick and set the school’s single-season scoring record as Wilkes-Barre Area advanced to the District 2/4 Class 4A semifinals.
Mendola’s single season goal total is up to 24 after Wednesday’s win. Walther Garcia, Austyn Lepore and Aiden Witczak added a goal each for the Wolfpack.
Wilkes-Barre Area will host Delaware Valley at 1 p.m. Saturday in the semifinal round.
Delaware Valley defeated Hazleton Area 2-1 in their quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday night.
