PLAINS TWP. — Three years ago, Justin Scanlon captured a district title and regional sixth as a freshman.

However, an injury in his sophomore season and a brutal draw in the 127-pound bracket his junior year kept the Honesdale wrestler off the top of the podium.

On Saturday, he made sure he left The Den at Wilkes-Barre Area with gold.

The Hornets senior dominated the two-day tournament, with two pins and a technical fall, to capture the 133-pound title and help lead Honesdale to its fourth-straight District 2 Class 2A team crown.

Nathan Schuman (107), Duke Martin (189), Levi Landry (215) and Bobby MacDowell (285) also secured titles, as the Hornets racked up 252 points — 103.5 ahead of second place Hanover Area.

The dominant performance ensured Scanlon and fellow senior Landry never experienced a season without winning district duals and the team title at individual districts in their high school careers.

“I’m really honored to be part of the team,” Scanlon said. “Everyone puts in the work every year. I don’t think there’s anywhere else in the district like it, and that’s why we do so well. There’s just the constant push to be the best we can and then coming out and going to team states four times, winning district titles, winning the league tournament. It’s great. The atmosphere in the room is amazing.”

As a sophomore, Scanlon was the top seed in the 127-pound bracket at districts, but he suffered a broken hand the week of the tournament and missed the remainder of the season.

His junior year, the 127 bracket was comprised of four former district champions, including Dallas’ Sidney O’Donnell who was seeded sixth because he was injured and wrestled only one match all season. O’Donnell defeated Scanlon, the No. 3 seed, in the quarterfinals and eventually captured the district title. Scanlon wrestled back for third, but lost his two matches at regionals.

“I was really upset not to get the championship my sophomore year, and then last year I fell just short and I had to battle back and had tough losses at regionals, and this year I just trained hungry,” Scanlon said.

Scanlon surpassed 100 career wins this season, and entered districts as the No. 1 seed. He secured a first-period pin against Valley View’s Mason Venia on Friday, and cruised to a 21-5 technical fall over Hanover Area’s Jace Thomas on Saturday morning.

Then, he sought revenge against No. 2 seed Lackawanna Trail’s Riley Borruso, who beat Scanlon, 13-10, on Jan. 16. After waiting three years to return to the district championships match, Scanlon needed just one minute and 11 seconds to reclaim gold, securing two takedowns and a pin.

“I knew Borruso. I knew I could beat him,” Scanlon said. “I felt like the first time I wasn’t wrestling as myself, and I just trained hungry and came out ready to get a title and ended up doing that.”

Next up for Scanlon and the top three finishers at each weight class will be the Northeast Regional, which is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Williamsport High School.

“I feel like I really found my groove this year,” Scanlon said. “My record may not show it, but getting my 100th win, I have a list of the things I want to do and make it to states and medals is the next one. I’m going to go to the regional tournament, and I plan on placing and pounding out a state medal.”

A district title eluded Landry his first three seasons, as he placed sixth, third and second. However, Landry dominated Friday and Saturday, securing two first-period pins and a third-period pin in the 215 final.

“This means a lot to me,” Landry said. “Everyone works very hard to get in this position and execute in it, and I’m very happy I did. Last year, I came up just short and I was hungry this year.”

Schuman’s four first-period pins led to his second-straight 107 title, Martin had three first-period pins and a second-period pin for his second-straight 189 crown and Bobby MacDowell secured a pin, a technical fall and a decision at heavyweight. Brody Walsh (121) and Sam Eisele (139) each secured silver, Jason Bronson (114), Jesse Balsam (127) and Morgen Wilcox (160) finished fourth and Jack Hook (152) and Marcus Carnegie (172) placed fifth for Honesdale.

“I’m very thankful for it. We always preach family, and we’re lucky to have it,” Landry said. “Our team, we get to be together all the time and fight together. The team aspect of it, not many people get to experience it, but I’m lucky I do.”

Outstanding Spartan

Mid Valley’s Matthew Almedina captured his fourth-straight district championship Saturday, as none of his matches lasted longer than one minute and one second.

The Spartans senior had two tech falls and two pins to roll to the 139 title, and his second-straight Class 2A Outstanding Wrestler award.

“It means a lot to me, but to me it’s just one step closer to capturing my goals,” Almedina said. “I’m the first four-time district champ in all the sports we have at Mid Valley, so it’s kind of cool, but it’s just one step closer to my goals.”

He captured regional silver last year and will look to qualify for states for the fourth-straight season next weekend.

“I feel great,” Almedina said. “I think this is my best season so far. Mentally-wise, I’m the best I’ve ever been, so I’m ready to win it all this year.”

Three more

Lackawanna Trail’s Mark Rebmann (145), Valley View’s Tywone Giles (152) and Western Wayne’s Gavin Morcom (160) claimed three of the Lackawanna League’s nine titles in Class 2A.

Rebmann wrestled his first match of the season Jan. 9 and took an 8-1 record into the tournament, which was good enough for a No. 4 seed. In the quarterfinals, he teched Montrose’s Wyatt Steele, edged top-seeded Michael Perez of Hanover Area, 4-3, in the semifinals and rolled to a 19-3 tech fall over No. 3 seed Jackson Scott of Lake-Lehman in the final.

“I feel like I came here and did what I was supposed to do,” the Lackawanna Trail junior said. “My coaches tell me how good I am, I know how good I am. I know that I’m one of the best kids in this state, I believe that. I fully believe that. Overcoming a lot of different things throughout the season, and not wrestling until almost the very end, but I came here and did what I was supposed to do.”

Giles continued his dominance, improving his record to 39-1 with two pins and two tech falls en route to the 152 crown. Last season, Giles missed weight on Day 2 of the tournament, which ended his postseason.

“It’s a really good start to the rest of my wrestling career,” the Valley View sophomore said. “It’s a milestone. I’ve just got to get to the rest of them now.”

Giles actually defended the 152-pound title for the school, with Valley View graduate Richie Leslie securing the crown at that weight last year.

“That’s actually really cool that that happened,” Giles said. “I’m hoping to keep it home here next year.”

Morcom had three pins to cruise to his second district title. The Western Wayne junior also has district silver and is a three-time regional qualifier.
