PECKVILLE, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — The Valley Community Library hosted its third annual Squishmallow art session Monday, tying the program to America’s 250th anniversary by blending drawing with history.
Kids sketched their own Squishmallow-style characters, turning historical figures into soft, cartoon-inspired designs.
Fawn Contreras, head of youth services at Valley Community Library, said the activity is designed to build creativity and communication skills.
“Kids were encouraged to research either a new historical figure or learn more about their favorite one and turn that figure into a Squishmallow. They get to tell a story about it, share a fact and practice art, research skills and public speaking,” said Contreras.
The event also connects to the America 250 celebration through the Lackawanna County library system’s winter reading challenge, “Reading Starts a Revolution,” which runs for all ages.
The winter challenge ends Saturday, and Contreras encourages people to stop by their local library branch to finish it before the deadline.
