Joseph Schemel
OBITUARY
Joseph Schemel, 78, of Archbald, died Saturday in Geisinger Community Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born in Archbald, son of the late John and Lucy McAuvic Schemel, he was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas/Christ the King Parish, Archbald. He was a graduate of Archbald High School and attended the Municipal Police Officers Education and Training Commission to obtain his police certification. He served as air police officer in the United States Air Force at the U.S. Strategic Com and in Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. Following his military service, he proudly served as an Archbald Police Officer for over thirty-five (35) years. He also served as a security officer post-retirement at various local facilities.
He enjoyed frequenting local restaurants and made many acquaintances along the way. He rarely missed an opportunity to get together for a coffee with his countless friends.
Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Rose Coggins Schemel, Archbald; first cousins, Mary and Robert Zelno, Archbald, and William Clark, Carbondale, along with several other cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, John, Reverend Francis X. Schemel, S.J., along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral mass will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 429 Church Street, Archbald. Friends may call Friday before the mass, 8:30 a.m. To 9:30 a.m. at the Harrison Funeral Home, 374 N. Main Street, Archbald. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Joseph’s Center, Scranton.
