PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — This weekend, Black History Month Meets Women’s History Month at the Betsy Ross House.
We’re expecting record crowds in the city this summer for the nation’s 250th birthday.
But the Betsy Ross House says it’s already seeing peak attendance so far this year.
People want to be close to history; they want to touch it.
“We’re getting a lot of people interested in learning about their heritage, learning their history,” says Lisa Acker Moulder, the director of Betsy Ross House.
“We’re telling the stories of the people you may not have heard of, the people who aren’t in your history lessons, who aren’t in history books, who don’t necessarily have documentary series about them.
We’re telling those stories that are equally as important as the stories of the founding fathers.”
This Saturday, there’s one more chance to experience the Black History Month programming at the Betsy Ross House.
Then, on Sunday, the calendar turns to Women’s History Month, where we meet some of the other female figures in Betsy’s life and hear some untold stories.
“You go up to the bed chamber, you meet Betsy Ross as she secretly sews the flag,” she says, “and then you go down into the basement, where you learn about something else Betsy Ross did that was a treasonous act during the 18th century.”
