A Northampton County man is accused of grooming a 13-year-old and encouraging her to harm herself, which resulted in police having to rescue her from a California motel, according to federal authorities.

Matthew Pysher, 18, of Bangor is charged with travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct, the U.S. attorney’s office of the Central District of California said Monday in a news release.

Between December and February, Pysher groomed and encouraged the girl to send him material of herself engaging in sexually explicit acts, and encouraged her to cut herself, federal authorities said. He met the alleged victim through Discord, an online messaging platform. The two met on a Discord server related to people suffering from mental illness, the release states.

The girl’s mother contacted the FBI this month because she was concerned her daughter was being encouraged to hurt herself by someone named “Matthew.” Pysher traveled to Los Angeles on Friday to have sexual contact with her, and took her to a motel in the area, authorities said.

When police got to the motel room, they found Pysher and the girl there with condoms, a knife, razor blades, bloody tissues and a boarding pass for Pysher’s flight from Philadelphia to Los Angeles, the release states. Authorities also found a Faraday bag, which is often used to block electronic signals, according to officials. The girl told authorities that they had sexual contact, and that he used a knife to repeatedly cut her, federal authorities said.

His plan was to take them to the top of a big hotel and jump off together, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times.

Investigators searched the girl’s phone and Pysher’s online activity and discovered he is associated with nihilistic violent extremist ideology, which often targets vulnerable people using social media to share child sexual abuse material or gore material to groom victims toward committing acts of violence, the release states.

Authorities said they often extort or blackmail victims into complying with their demands, which include self-harm; online or in-person sexual acts; harm to animals; sexual exploitation of siblings or others; acts of violence; and threats of violence.

The FBI in Los Angeles believes there may be more victims, and anyone with more information should contact authorities at 310-477-6565.
