BERN TWP., Pa. – Another county is joining the regional efforts to open a youth detention center in Berks County.

The Lackawanna County Commissioners approved a measure to send young offenders to a center that’s planned to open in Bern Township.

Officials there say at times, offenders have been sent as far away as Ohio.

Berks County’s Deputy Chief Operations Officer says the need for detention beds is a pressing issue throughout Pennsylvania.

Berks is also working with Lehigh and Dauphin counties to open the center.
