READING, Pa. – A local boxing gym is getting a big boost from the state.
Wednesday, Democratic state Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz presented Star City Boxing with a check for $50,000.
The nonprofit on Centre Avenue in Reading trains athletes of all skill levels and gives youth the chance to build healthy habits while building confidence.
“This gym is not only about sparring… teaching them about discipline,” Cepeda-Freytiz, who represents Berks County, said.
The gym says the grant money will help it buy new equipment, enter tournaments, and building on the programs it already offers.
