Mary R. Capwell
OBITUARY
Mary R. Capwell, 74, of Moosic died Tuesday, February 24, 2026 at St. Mary ‘s Villa Nursing Home.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Ray and Martha Lutz Capwell, she was a graduate of West Scranton High School, Class of 1969. She proudly served in the United States Army, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant, where she was a member of the Women’s Army Corp. She was active duty from 1969 – 1974, and then continued serving in the Army Reserves until 2011. Prior to retirement she worked for 32 years at the VA Medical Center.
She loved spending time with her canine friends and her family, especially her nieces and nephews who were like children to her. She enjoyed nature, and being outdoors.
Mary’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff of St. Mary’s Villa and of Hospice of the Sacred Heart for all of their kind and compassionate care they provided for her.
Surviving sisters Tammy Dando and husband Matthew, Sharon Curtis and husband Ernest, twin-sister Laura Lee, Carline Connolly and husband David; brother Ray Capwell and wife Debbie, and Brian Capwell; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by sister Georgia Thomas; sister-in-law Michelle Capwell.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 6 pm in the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton. Interment in Easton Cemetery will be private. Family and friends may pay their respects Friday from 4pm until time of service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Villa, 516 Saint Mary’s Villa Road, Elmhurst Township, PA 18444 or to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 30 Ed Preate Dr. Suite 108, Moosic, PA 18507.
