WALNUTPORT, Pa. – A non-profit in Northampton County has a new location to call home, where families can shop for clothing, household items, and even a little hope, without spending a dime.
69 News Reporter Sydney Kay was in Walnutport on Lehigh Gap Street Thursday morning with a look into the organization.
Denise “Neicee” Martinez, Founder and CEO of Caring DAM Hearts, said a medical issue she had led her to want to give back to the community as part of her recovery and journey. She knows many people are struggling, and felt the need to collect hats, gloves, and scarves out of her garage. That led her to collect other things as part of an effort called Project Warm and Cozy.
The non-profit was in Slatington for about three and a half years, but moved out after the rent was increased last year. She said she then ventured out to find a bigger space for the shop.
Martinez said Caring DAM Hearts takes donations from the community. Everything that comes in is checked for rips, stains, and tears. The non-profit also checks for name-brand items, which go to the organization’s thrift boutique at the South Mall, which keeps the Walnutport store up and running, she said.
Everything in the shop is free.
On the shop’s first day, around 900 items were given out.Â
She said customers love the dignity and respect they receive when they walk through the store’s doors.
The shop is open Tuesday through Friday.
