County to host Commissioners’ Cup Soccer Skills Challenge
Lackawanna County will conduct the Commissioners’ Cup Youth Soccer Skills Challenge on Saturday, Nov. 1, at Staback Park in Archbald for players from throughout Northeast Pennsylvania.
Players 8 and younger and 10 and younger will compete from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Players 12 and under and 14 and under will take to the pitch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Players will participate in five skills challenges to earn points. The 10 highest scorers in each division will win medals. They also may represent their youth teams or clubs to help determine overall team champions at the recreation and club levels.
The skills challenges are:
Shooting: Kick balls at targets with the goal.
Passing: Kick balls through obstacles at targets.
Dribbling: Negotiate a timed obstacle course.
Touch: Kick balls off a bounce into targets.
Corner kick: Kick balls at targets in or near goals.
The entry fee is $10 per participant, cash or check payable to the Lackawanna County Visitors Bureau, in advance or on the day of the event.
Event sponsors are Lackawanna County, the Lackawanna County Visitors Bureau, the Lackawanna Susquehanna Office of Drug & Alcohol, Dick’s House of Sport, the Lackawanna County Department of Parks and Recreation, NEPSAY youth soccer, Archbald Borough, Valley in Motion, the Anthracite Football Club, Soccer Shots, Scranton Social Sports Club, TNT Elite FC, Valley Youth Soccer, North Pocono Youth Soccer and Scranton FC.
Historical society to host “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” 50th anniversary showing
The Forest City Area Historical Society will celebrate the 50th anniversary of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” with a showing Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. at the historical society museum at Main and Dundaff streets in Forest City.
Prop bags will be available or attendees can bring their own props to partake in the fun. The society’s concession stand will be open to purchase candy and soda.
The movie will be shown on a 9-by-12-foot screen in the museum. The public is welcome.
The museum will open at 6:30 p.m. to allow attendees to explore the historical exhibits on display. The museum is open every Saturday through Nov. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” movie is rated R. No one under 17 years old will be allowed without an accompanying adult.

Dickson City Light and Banner Association to hold coloring contest
The Dickson City Light and Banner Association will once again sponsor the annual Dickson City Christmas Coloring Contest.
The contest is open to all children residing in Dickson City between 5 and 12 years old. Winners will be selected from three distinct age groups, and each top winner will receive a $50 Amazon gift card as a prize. Everyone who enters will receive a gift bag and Certificate of Recognition.
All entrants in the coloring contest will be given the special honor of participating in the lighting of the Christmas tree at the free community Christmas event, “A Dickson City Christmas.” This celebration will take place on Sunday, Nov. 23, at Riverside Park, Enterprise Street, Dickson City.
Coloring pages and entry forms can be picked up at the Dickson City Borough Building, 801 Enterprise St., from Monday to Friday during normal business hours.
All entries must be submitted by Tuesday, Nov. 18.
Johnson College to hold fall open house
Johnson College will hold its fall open house on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on its Scranton campus at 3427 N. Main Ave.
The open house will include discussions about the admissions process, information about financial aid for those who qualify and student services such as student life, student support and career services. Same-day acceptance will be available for many programs if students bring their high school or college transcripts.
Tours of each technical area will be conducted and program directors and instructors will be available to review the specifics of their programs.
