Scranton Prep survived a late-game 3-point barrage by Valley View to defeat the Cougars 52-47 Thursday night to capture the District 2 Class 4A girls basketball championship at Mohegan Arena.
The Classics (20-5) won their fourth consecutive D2-4A championship. They will play Lancaster Catholic, the District 3 fourth seed, on March 7 in the first round of the PIAA Class 4A state playoffs. Valley View (19-6) will face the District 11 second seed, also on March 7.
Prep had a solid lead when Valley View connected on three 3-pointers. Ava Gazoo’s trey with 17 seconds left pulled the Cougars within 50-47.
Prep’s Chloe Mamera hit two free throws a few seconds later for the final points of the game. The Classics entered the fourth quarter with a 40-32 lead.
Mamera led Prep with 21 points. Valley View’s Cora Castellani led her team with 19.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Riverside 51, Dunmore 48
Brayden Rose hit a short jumper with 20 seconds left for the lead and made two free throws with four seconds remaining as top-seeded Riverside rallied to defeat second-seeded Dunmore for the District 2 Class 3A championship at Mohegan Arena.
Riverside (23-1) will play the District 4 third seed in the PIAA state playoffs on March 7. Dunmore (21-4) will play the District 4 champion, also on March 7.
Dunmore, the only team to defeat Riverside, led 11-1 early in the first quarter before the Vikings began their comeback.
COLLEGES
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Wilkes 79, Catholic University 70
A strong second-half performance was key for the Colonels as they defeated top-seeded Catholic University in the semifinals of the Landmark Conference tournament.
Wilkes trailed by four at the break, but surged ahead early in the second quarter and never relinquished the lead from there.
As the highest seed remaining, fourth-seeded Wilkes will host the Landmark Conference title game on Saturday against Susquehanna University, the sixth seed. Susquehanna defeated Drew University in the other semifinal game.
Lucas Lesko scored 27 points to lead the Colonels, also dishing out a team-high five assists. Jack Argento added 18 points, Daniel Santaniello chipped in 17 and Eli Becker finished with 15 points in the win.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Wilkes 10, Gwynedd Mercy 6
The Colonels improved to 2-0 to start the year with a win over Gwynedd Mercy University.
Alexis Gutilla led Wilkes with four goals, while Nina-Lily Veale added a hat trick. Taylor Sparks finished with two goals and four assists, and Emily Jackson added a goal and an assist.
