ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Rehearsals are underway for the Allentown Symphony Orchestra Youth and Family Concert Series.

The show is described as an introduction to classical music for the next generation while highlighting our past.

“We have a lot of young minds in here to learn not only the history but the connection to music from that time period ,” said Carolyn Powell the director of education.

Miller Symphony hall is home to the musical adventure through America’s early days the show being played for students this week and concluding with a public show on Saturday.

“We wanted to celebrate the foundation of our country and what it means to be American,” Powell said.

The show features a Ben Franklin narrator, and three student soloists plus a world renowned Glass Harmonica player.

“It’s an instrument invented by Ben Franklin and this piece Mozart wrote is going to be featured in this concert so he travels around playing his glass harmonica,” she said.

Prior to the show on Saturday, families are encouraged to participate in a pre-concert orchestra lab where kids get the chance to try instruments, do crafts and learn about American history. The workshop starting at 12:30 on Saturday in the Rodale Room.

Organizers hope that kids walk away from the series learning something about our past and realizing that classical music is also for them.
