A man died at the scene of a crash in Covington Township on Friday evening.
Lackawanna County Coroner Tim Rowland identified the man as Darrel Ambrose Jr., 24, of Tobyhanna.
Ambrose died from severe head trauma. He was riding in the front passenger seat of a vehicle struck head-on by another vehicle, Rowland said.
At about 11 p.m., Covington Fire and EMS responded to a serious head-on crash on Interstate 380 southbound after a wrong-way driver caused a collision that left one person dead and three injured, the department said in a release.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene following reports of a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on the interstate. Upon arrival, firefighters and EMS personnel found two heavily damaged vehicles with multiple patients trapped inside, the release continued.
Two patients required extrication by fire crews before being transported to a local trauma center for treatment.
Mutual aid companies assisted at the scene, providing additional manpower and resources to manage the incident, secure the roadway, and support patient care efforts.
The southbound lanes of Interstate 380 were temporarily closed while emergency crews operated and law enforcement conducted an investigation into the crash. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
